As a theologian, one of the biggest gifts I’ve come to appreciate is the magic that lies in nature. The power of the divine feels ever so powerful when you are outdoors, and everything out there seems to hold a lot of meaning.

I recently came across a blue jay feather and was fascinated by its beauty and significance. My research about the bird and its feathers led me to the worlds of mythology and mysticism.

As a Christian, many of my findings left a sour taste in my mouth, but learning means keeping an open mind and respecting the many differing beliefs. Subsequently, I learned a lot by poring through books and articles.

The other day, somewhat coincidentally, my theology students brought up the subject of the blue jay feathers since one of them had discussed the superstition around different bird feathers.
