As a faithful Christian, I have a great interest in diversely understanding religion. I have always been intrigued to discover more fascinating facts about the Mennonites, especially their beliefs regarding polygamy. I first learned about them in theology school, and after that, I moved to work in a place primarily occupied by the Mennonites. I interacted with most of them and extensively learned their views and beliefs about polygamy. A few weeks ago, we discussed the Mennonites with my fellow theologians. A few of them were unsure if the Mennonites practiced polygamy or Monogamy and wanted to know what the Mennonites believed regarding marriage. Based on my research and interactions with the Mennonites, I am well-informed and able to provide you with facts on the marriage beliefs of the Mennonites. So, do Mennonites practice polygamy?
Mennonites do not practice polygamy. They believe and follow the teachings of the Bible, which forbids them from practicing polygamy marriages (1 Timothy 3:2). Therefore, a Mennonite husband is only allowed to have one wife.
So, join me as I extensively discuss the Mennonites and their beliefs about marriage and polygamy. I will talk about marriage rules among the Mennonites, whether a Mennonite man can practice polygamy, and if a Mennonite man can marry another wife after divorce. So, keep reading to learn more.
What are the Marriage rules among the Mennonites?
Mennonites have solid rules they adhere to when it comes to marriage. They are encouraged to marry within the same church (forbidden from marrying non-Mennonites). Married women in the Mennonite religion put on bonnets, which symbolize their submission to their husbands. It is also a sign to the public showing their marital status so the suitors can keep away.
Women are expected to be submissive to their husbands, and husbands are supposed to love their wives (Ephesians 5:22-25). In this verse, women are commanded to be submissive to their husbands, and the husbands are commanded to love their wives just as Christ loves the church. Mennonites strictly observe biblical rules, and thus submission is a huge part of marriage amongst them.
Moreover, husbands are supposed to take part in leadership positions in church while women raise the children. Additionally, Mennonites do not allow their community members to engage in sexual relations before marriage as it is against their teachings (1 Corinthians 7:2).
Can a Mennonite man have more than one wife?
Mennonite beliefs and practices do not approve of polygamy, which is having more than one marriage partner. This is because the religion adheres to Christian teachings in 1 Corinthians 7:1-16. Therefore, a Mennonite man cannot be allowed to have another wife besides the one he has married.
Furthermore, according to the Bible in Ephesians 5:31, a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, where the two shall become one. Therefore, this binds the Mennonite husband to one wife since the teachings of the Bible govern their way of life.
What is the rationale behind Monogamy among Mennonites?
Mennonites are strong believers in the teachings of the Bible, and therefore, they agree and practice Monogamy. The scripture in the books of Titus 1:6 talks about being faithful to one wife. They interpret this bible verse as a commandment for them to be married to one partner and stay loyal to one partner.
Additionally, Mennonites consider Monogamy as being in accordance with their teachings about respect for each other and living in peace. They believe by practicing Monogamy, they show respect to each other, and it’s a way of living in peace within the community.
Can a Mennonite man marry another wife after divorce?
No, Mennonites do not believe in divorce as this is against biblical teachings, which govern them. In the book of 1 Corinthians 7:10-11, the Bible warns against divorce, and in case of a divorce, both the man and the woman remain unmarried. They live as per this teaching; therefore, once an individual has decided to marry, there is no turning back; it’s a lifetime commitment that they have to live with.
