The Catholic Church makes its money from donations given by its members worldwide. The most common contribution is the tithe which makes a lot of money for the church. Additionally, the Roman Catholic Church puts in place a charitable contribution known as Peter’s Pence. Churches around the world pay Peter’s pence once a year.

This church is the largest religious body, with numerous branches in nearly every part of the world. That means that quantifying the church’s wealth is not a brief affair. Ultimately, Economic experts suggest that it is virtually impossible to calculate the money and assets owned by this church. Its investments range from insurance and banking to real estate and construction.
Although the exact figures have not been determined, financial analysts estimate that this church is worth between $10 to $15 billion. Projections in the Italian stock market indicate that it has accrued $1.6 billion in stocks. In Europe, the Vatican has invested substantial money in banks such as the Hambros bank. It has also ventured into business with enterprises like Credit Suisse in Zurich and Rothschilds in France.
According to Manhattan, no organization or institution has been able to match the financial prowess shown by the Catholic Church. In America, the church rakes in millions of dollars annually by investing in the New York Stock Exchange. The church also owns about 177 million acres of land, coming only second to government-owned land.

As mentioned earlier, tithing is one of the main ways the Catholic Church maintains a steady flow of income. The concept of tithing is supported in the book of Genesis 14:19-20 which says; And he blessed him and said, Blessed, be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of Heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand! And Abram gave Him a tenth of everything”.
The Holy See is the body that governs the finances and many other aspects of the church. It is headquartered in the Vatican, which is the smallest country in the world. Seated on 110 acres of land, the Vatican is home to 1000 civilians. Thanks to contributions such as Peter’s pence, tithes, businesses, and investments in thriving industries, it enjoys a thriving economy.
Peter’s pence was established by Pope Pius IX to cater to the needs of the less fortunate in society. The prerogative was initiated to enable the Pope to perform “good works .”Peter’s pence was also meant to cover the expenses incurred in the daily operations of the Vatican.
Data shows that the U.S. is the most significant contributor to Peter’s pence. The Catholic Church in the US is said to be worth more than the top five corporations in America. Figures show that the US accounts for 30% of the donations sent to the Holy See. In 2021, sources say that Peter’s pence collections amounted to a whopping 46.9 million Euros. Still, it pales in comparison to the 69.7 million Euros collected in 2014.

Did the Catholic Church start getting rich in the middle ages?
The Catholic Church was an important fixture in European society during the Middle Ages. The church was involved in almost every social and political activity among Europeans. The church was actively involved in the coronation and confirmation of new Kings. Throughout this period, the Catholic Church continued to grow in power and influence, becoming the beating heart of communities all over Europe. Most people would go to church to socialize and take a break from weekly labor.
The early Roman Catholic Church was quite strict about the offering of tithes. It used certain chapters in the bible to warn the congregations against the dangers of holding back tithe offerings. In the book of Acts 5:1-11, the bible recounts the story of a couple, Ananias and Sapphira, who sold a piece of property and held back some of it against God’s will. The couple died simultaneously due to a lack of obedience to the instructions on tithing. The Roman church would apply such teaching to instill fear in the Christians.
Early church members also had to pay for various sacraments such as marriage, baptism, and Holy Communion. People who sinned would also be required to pay penance to the church. In such cases, wealthy people would folk over their land to the church. As a result, the church’s assets increased exponentially. Historical sources say that at one point, the Roman Catholic Church owned almost 1/3 of the land in the western parts of Europe.
According to the law the then law, the Roman church was viewed as independent. That meant it was not required to pay land taxes to the rulers. In light of this, the people at the head of the early Roman church became incredibly wealthy. It was a time when Nobles fought to ascend the clergy as bishops in the church.
It is worth noting that in the Middle Ages, bishops were part of the King’s council. This gave them access to more money which continued to build the church’s wealth and influence. The Roman church maintained its power by presenting the Pope as God’s representative in the world. Kings who did not submit to papal power would be excommunicated in the Middle Ages. Monasteries had inbuilt schools and libraries, giving the clergy access to education. Quality education ensured that the Roman church was socially empowered to create more wealth over the centuries.
