I memorized and recited Psalm 23 when I was young and I still have it in my memory to date. We are accustomed to sing and pray this psalm to express God’s goodness but there are other dimensions to it.

I brought up the discussion on Psalm 23 in our bible study one day, and one member said that it can be used when one needs discernment.

Other members wanted to know which other verses in the book of Psalms you can read when you need discernment.

Psalm 119:125

“I am your servant; give me discernment that I may understand your statutes.”

In this verse, the psalmist recognizes that he is God’s servant and needs His help to understand His word. It reminds you to have the same eagerness to hear, read, and understand the word.

It’s a great verse to read when you want to gain an understanding of His Word.

Psalm 119:66

“Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I trust your commands.”

In this verse, David asks God to teach him because he knows that He is a good teacher. He believes that His commandments are the best to start with.

It reminds you that as a good learner seeking knowledge and good judgment, you need to pursue His word.

Psalm 119:27

“Cause me to understand the way of your precepts, that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds.”

In this verse, the psalmist asks God to give him a deep insight into His word or rules and how to live a pleasing life to his God. He adds by saying that it is so that he may go out and share it with others.

This verse teaches you that after your heart has been opened to understand the gospel, you should proclaim it to others.

Psalm 23:1-6

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

In these verses, the psalmist asks God to lead him as his shepherd. He trusts in His guidance, provision, and protection from any destruction.

Psalm 111:10

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.”

In this verse, the psalmist acknowledges that only God’s voice can lead him to pure and truthful knowledge. Fearing God will guide you in your decisions, words, and attitude, and your relationships.

This verse reminds you to practice fearing the Lord.

Psalm 37:30

“The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak what is just.”

In this verse, David says that those who have gained an understanding of the truths of God, speak justice and wisdom.

He says that you can only truly worship God when you have His word in your heart.

This verse teaches you not to ignore the word of God by just reading it and going your way but to have it in your heart.

Psalm 37:4

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

In this verse, David says that spending time knowing the Lord through His word leads to gaining more knowledge and God fulfilling His promises in your life.

It reminds you that God will reveal His plan and will over your life when you follow His ways.

How to use Psalms to ask God for discernment

You can use Psalms to ask God for discernment by praying for a quieted and calm heart according to Psalm 131, so that you can discern God’s will and leading.

You can know the word but not know how to apply it in your daily life. By quieting your heart, you can ask God to grant you an understanding of His law which is a spiritual need.

What is the best time to pray these Psalms?

The best time to pray these Psalms is when you want to discern the seasons and times you are in. You need to focus and rely on what God is saying to you to discern His will and live a purposeful life.

When we pray for discernment using these Psalms, the Holy Spirit will reveal to us what is good or bad, truth or a lie, and right or wrong.

Can you pray these Psalms on behalf of someone else?

Most scholars believe you can use Psalms to pray for the whole world or church. They suggest that if someone does not find them relevant to them at a particular moment, someone else may need them.

A pastor, for example, can use these psalms to pray for someone who needs direction or guidance in life.
