Death can be so brutal, but in Christ, we find comfort and hope. While reading about grief and Christianity during my time in theology school, I was intrigued to find out if the departed can see us or communicate with us. I spent a lot of time on the Word, conducted extensive research, and also consulted several theology professors to broaden my understanding of this topic. I, later on, decided to form a support group where we discussed grief from a Christian perspective. A few days ago, a member of the group wanted to know whether our departed loved ones could see us from heaven. The other members also found this question interesting and were curious to know the answer. Since I had conducted extensive research on this issue, I had all the answers at my fingertips. So, can loved ones in heaven look down on you?
No one is certain whether loved ones in heaven look down on us. Some theologians argue that the “cloud of witnesses” mentioned in Hebrews 12:1 refers to the dead who watch over us. However, there is no solid evidence in the Bible to support this interpretation.
So, join me as we discuss extensively whether our loved ones can communicate with us. I cover whether there is biblical proof that people in heaven can see us, how to know if our departed loved ones are with us, if our departed loved ones who are not in heaven can see us, and whether our loved ones in heaven remember us. Keep reading to learn more.
How do you know if someone who passed away is with you?

No one is certain how you can tell if someone who has passed is with you. However, different people hold different beliefs and teach signs to look out for that might indicate your loved one who passed is with you. Some people believe that randomly finding feathers from the grounds means that your deceased loved one is trying to send a message.
Other beliefs of signs that your loved one is with you include; spotting a dragonfly when you smell their scent or any scent that is familiar, dreaming about them, finding their personal items in odd places, hearing someone say your name, or feeling their presence.
Is there biblical proof that people in heaven can see us?
There is no concrete biblical proof that people in heaven can see us. However, some people interpret the cloud of witnesses mentioned in Hebrews 12:1 as people in heaven who look down on us. However, as much as this idea sounds soothing, theologians have debunked this verse and argued that it does not mean that our departed loved ones are watching us. They believe that the men and women who have run a faithful race are those who are referred to as the “great cloud of witness.”
Can the dead see us even if they are not in heaven?
No one knows for sure if the dead can see us even when they are not in heaven. The Bible is also silent about whether those who are dead and not in heaven can see us. The Bible, however, offers us some guidance on how to deal with the dead. It warns us severely from consulting the dead. Leviticus 20:27 notes that anyone who is caught consulting spirits or mediums should be stoned.
Do our loved ones in heaven remember us?

There is also no concrete answer to this question. However, some theologians and Christians believe that our departed loved in heaven can remember us. They argue that according to John’s vision as recorded in Revelation 6:10, the saints remembered and cried for vengeance from the Lord on those who persecuted them on earth; how then can they lack memories of loved ones?
Furthermore, in Luke 16:25, Abraham tells the rich young man in hell to recall Lazarus, who did not have good things while on earth but is now comforted. Therefore, this points towards the possibility that our departed loved ones who are in heaven actually remember us.
Can a dead person come to visit you from heaven?
No one can establish with certainty whether the dead can visit us from heaven. In Samuel 28, King Saul contacted Samuel’s ghost through a medium, an act that the Bible condemns. In the book of Job 14:10-12, the Bible notes that when one dies, they breathe their last and fade away. This passage continues further and notes that the dead will lie down and not rise till when the heavens are no more. Therefore, this could mean that the dead cannot visit us from heaven, and once they have died, they are unconscious, awaiting the resurrection.
Can our loved one send us messages from heaven?
There is no solid biblical proof to show that our loved ones can send us messages from heaven. However, some Bible Scholars suggest that there could be instances when our departed loved ones are allowed to send us a message or sign, not regularly, though. On the other hand, others note that the dead cannot communicate with us as they are in an unconscious state, awaiting the second coming of Jesus. Moreover, the scripture warns us in the book of Leviticus 19:31 not to turn to the spirits or seek mediums, for they might defile us.
