From the moment we are brought into this world, our mothers are the first people we interact with, and they play a crucial role in shaping our lives. Let us explore the significance of mothers in our lives from a biblical perspective and how their love, care, and nurturing play a vital role in shaping us into the people we become. So, how many times is mother mentioned in the Bible?
The Bible provides numerous examples of mothers’ vital role in the lives of biblical figures. From Sarah, who gave birth to Isaac at an old age, to Mary, who gave birth to Jesus Christ, mothers have always been essential in shaping history. The word “mother” appears in the Bible approximately 300 times, depending on the translation.

Where in the Bible does it first mention mother?
The Bible first mentions a mother in Genesis 2:24-25, describing the first human family. It states that a man must abandon his mother and father and cling to his bride, after which the two become one flesh. The reference implies that Adam and Eve’s future offspring will also have mothers.
The Bible also refers to Eve as the “mother of all living” in Genesis 3:20, after she and Adam sinned and were expelled from the Garden of Eden. This phrase acknowledges Eve as the first mother from whom all future generations of humanity would descend.
What does the Bible say about mothers?
The Bible has a lot to say about mothers and urges Christians to honor and cherish their mothers. In the Old Testament, mothers are mentioned in Exodus 20:12 in one of the Ten Commandments. It states that children should respect their father and mother so that they may live long. Additionally, the Bible uses maternal imagery to describe God’s love and care for his people. For example, in Isaiah 66:13, God says He will comfort his people just like a mother does to her child.
In the New Testament, the importance of mothers is emphasized. In 2 Timothy 1:5, Apostle Paul writes to Timothy and highlights Timothy’s mother and grandmother’s influence on his faith. This shows the importance of a mother’s example in shaping her children’s beliefs and values.
Bible Verses about Mothers to Share on Mother’s Day
The following verses can be used to show appreciation for mothers and the important role they play in our lives.
This verse illustrates that children appreciate their mother, and the husband praises the wife.
This verse illustrates that God will comfort his people just as a mother comforts her child.

Examples of Mothers in the Bible Who Served God Well
There are many examples of mothers in the Bible who served God well. Here are a few:
Hannah: Hannah was the mother of Samuel, one of the greatest prophets in the Old Testament. She struggled with infertility and was ridiculed by her husband’s other wife, but she persisted in prayer and eventually conceived and gave birth to Samuel.1 Samuel 1:10 She dedicated him to God’s service, and he grew up to become a faithful servant of God.
Jochebed: Jochebed was the mother of Moses, who led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. She risked her own life to save Moses as a baby, hiding him in a basket and sending him down the river to be found by the Pharaoh’s daughter. She also raised him to love God and instilled a sense of his Hebrew heritage (Exodus 2:7-8).
Mary: Mary was the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. She was a humble and obedient servant of God who accepted the angel Gabriel’s message that she would bear a child, even though she was a virgin Luke 1:38 .She raised Jesus to love and serve God and stood by him during his ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection (Luke 2:51).
Elizabeth: John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Jesus, was Elizabeth’s son. She was a righteous and faithful woman who, like Hannah, had struggled with infertility but eventually conceived and gave birth to a son who would become a great prophet (Luke 1:7, 13).
Sarah: Sarah’s faithfulness and obedience to God are evident in her willingness to follow her husband, Abraham, on their journey to the land of Canaan, as God had commanded them. She also demonstrated great faith when she willingly agreed to sacrifice her son Isaac as an offering to God, as Abraham had instructed. Hebrews 11:11-12 highlights Sarah’s faith in God’s promise and how she served God well by believing in Him despite the odds stacked against her.
These women all demonstrated faith, courage, and devotion to God in their roles as mothers, and their examples continue to inspire and encourage us today.
Characteristics of a Good Mother in the Bible
Love: A good mother should show love and affection to her children, just as God shows love to us. In Titus 2:4, Paul instructs older women to teach younger women to love their children.
Nurturing: A good mother should care for and nurture her children, providing them with the physical, emotional, and spiritual support they need to grow and thrive. In 1 Thessalonians 2:7, Paul describes his ministry to the Thessalonians as a mother caring for her children.
Disciplined: A good mother should discipline her children lovingly and appropriately, as Proverbs 13:24 reminds us that a parent who loves their children is cautious about punishing them, whereas the parent who dislikes their children spares the rod.
Faith: A good mother should have faith in God and instill that faith in her children. In 2 Timothy 1:5, Paul commends Timothy’s mother and grandmother for passing on their faith to him.
Wisdom: A good mother should possess wisdom and teach her children to seek wisdom and knowledge. Proverbs 31:26 describes a virtuous woman, who is also a mother, as having wisdom on her tongue.
Sacrifice: A good mother should be willing to sacrifice for her children, just as Christ made the ultimate sacrifice for us. (John 15:13).
