The Bible says that God placed the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil at the center of the Garden. When Eve and Adam sinned by eating from the tree of knowledge, God ordered that the tree of life be guarded so that the first humanity should not eat from it and live forever. So, it is clear that the tree of life plays a role in eternal life, and so is Jesus. So, is Jesus the tree of life?
The Bible does not say whether Jesus is the tree of life or not. Jesus just called himself the true vine in the book of John 15:1. However, theologians link him to the tree of life according to John 14:6. The Bible also implies in the book of Revelation 22:14 that the tree of life is salvation, and we know that in Christ we are saved. The book of Revelations 22:1-2 also talks about the leaves of the tree of life as healing for all nations. Similarly, Isaiah 53:5 says, “By his stripes, we are healed.” Therefore, although the Bible does not directly mention that Jesus is the tree of life, substantial evidence points toward that fact.
So, what is the meaning of the tree of life in the Bible? Does the Bible say Jesus is the tree of life? Did Jesus declare himself the tree of life? Why is it important that Jesus is the tree of life? Is Jesus the tree of life found in Genesis? What is the tree of life described in Revelation? Bible verse about the tree of life? Continue reading to get the answers to this question and more.
What is the meaning of the tree of life in the Bible?
As referenced in Genesis, the tree of life is a life-giving tree that supports both spiritual and physical life. Genesis 2:9 describes the tree of life in the Garden of Eden. The verse notes that it was located at the center of the Garden, meaning the first couple could have easily accessed it.
More details about the tree of life come after the fall of Eve and Adam. Genesis 3:22 says, “The Lord God said, the man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever.”
After Adam and Eve sinned before God, God put death as a punishment for humanity. Romans 5:17 notes that it is because of the trespasses of man that death reigned forever through that man. God’s word from the above passage indicates that the tree of life had a huge role to play when it came to maintaining eternal life.
Does the Bible say Jesus is the tree of life?
The Bible does not explicitly say that Jesus is the tree of life. However, we know that Jesus is the key to getting eternal life. John 14:6 says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” The Bible also links the tree of life with eternal life.
Furthermore, enough biblical evidence points to the fact that Jesus is the tree of life. John wrote in Revelation 22:14 that the tree of life is salvation. Similarly, the scripture notes that in Jesus Christ, we are saved; out of him, we are nothing. Revelation also describes that the tree of life can heal all nations, a feature we also get in Jesus Christ as Isaiah notes that “by his stripes, we are healed.”
Did Jesus declare himself the tree of life?
There is nowhere in the scripture where Jesus declared himself the tree of life or even compared himself to the tree of life. However, Jesus called himself the vine in the book of John 15:1-5, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.”
Why is it important that Jesus is the tree of life?
It is important that Jesus is the tree of life because, in him, we are saved and assured of eternal life. After Adam and Eve sinned against God, God instructed that the tree of life be guarded so that the first couple could not eat from it and live forever. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave us his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Is Jesus the tree of life found in Genesis?
The book of Genesis only accounts for the tree of life that God created in the Garden of Eden. However, there is substantial evidence in the Bible that points to the fact that this tree of life in Genesis is actually Jesus. Genesis 3:2, God says that the tree of life should be guarded so that Adam and Eve cannot eat from it and live forever. Jesus says in the book of John 11:25-26 that he is the life, and whoever believes in him will not die. “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.”
What is the tree of life described in Revelation?
The book of Revelation mentions the tree of life a couple of times. Revelation 22:1-2 notes that the tree of life bears twelve fruits. “Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the lamb, in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month, and the tree’s leaves were for the healing of the nations.”
Furthermore, Revelation 22:14-15 indicates that the tree of life is salvation. Through salvation and believing in Jesus Christ, we are granted eternal life. And just like in Genesis, the tree of life could give man eternal life only if they could have eaten from it.
Bible verse about the tree of life
Genesis 2:8-9 says, “The Lord God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden, and there he placed the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the Lord God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for fool; the tree of life also in the midst of the Garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”
Theologians argue that the tree that God indicated gave eternal life represented Jesus. This is because the New Testament is clear that those who will get eternal life are those who will believe in Jesus.
Revelation 2:7 says, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in paradise.”
Some scholars interpret this verse as being with Christ in paradise. This is because the scripture clearly states that we will enter heaven only through Jesus.
Genesis 3:24 says, “So he drove man out, and at the east of the garden of Eden he stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.”
As stated earlier, the tree of life that the cherubim were instructed to guide might have represented Jesus Christ because only in him can we get eternal life.
