Recently, during a study of the Book of Psalms, one of our bible study members brought up the idea of having a Psalm to memorize each week.
I have always loved reading and memorizing Bible verses since my early days in Bible school, especially the Psalms because of their profound messages and I’m well-versed in this book.
I was, therefore, more than happy to share my sentiments on which verses in the book would serve as great memory verses. I decided to write this article for anyone wondering what the best Psalms to memorize are.
5 Best Psalms to Memorize
PSALM 23
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
This powerful chapter only has six verses and is great to memorize. It talks about how the Lord always watches over us and guides us through hard times.
PSALM 1
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.”
Psalm 1 is also a short chapter, with only six verses, which outline the two ways in which a person can choose to live. The chapter shows how the righteous live happy lives while the wicked suffer.
It basically gives a blueprint of how God wants us to live.
PSALM 100
“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.”
This chapter, comprising only 5 verses, conveys a message on the importance of thanksgiving and guides us on how we should worship the Lord joyfully because His love endures forever.
PSALM 13
“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.”
Psalm 13 is a prayer by David to God when he was in distress. It only has 6 verses and can serve as a great prayer when you are in trouble and feel like giving up.
PSALM 20
“May the Lord answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you. May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion. May he remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings. May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.”
Psalm 20 has 9 verses and is a prayer by the Israelites asking God to answer their King’s cry for help in their days of trouble.
These verses can serve as a great prayer when you’re struggling to find the right words when asking the Lord to help you and answer your prayer.
What is the Best to Help Children Memorize?
Psalm 4:8 is one of the best Psalms to help children memorize and have them recite, especially at night time, because it lets them know that the Lord will watch over them and keep them safe as they sleep.
Children are often scared of the dark and may have nightmares often, so this verse can help calm them down. It encourages them to sleep confidently with no worries because they have someone protecting them as they sleep.
This verse is great if you’re trying to get your child to sleep through the night on their own bed without crawling in your bed in the middle of the night.
It may also prevent bedtime tantrums because most kids are just scared and don’t want to be left alone at night, even though they are tired.
How to Help Kids Memorize the Psalms?
To help kids memorize the Psalms, break them down into phrases and let the child memorize the phrases one at a time before moving to the next phrase.
Give small rewards to motivate kids to memorize the verses. You can also make the Psalms into simple tunes and turn them into a fun song for the kids to learn and enjoy singing.
Lastly, take time to explain the meaning of the Psalms to your child to help them memorize and internalize it better.
