Why don’t we pray to a heavenly mother? (Do Christians believe in a heavenly mother?)

As a theologian interested in studying Christianity, I got captivated by the different Christianity policies and beliefs. About three years ago, I got a special interest in the doctrine of the Heavenly Mother and decided to do more research. I wanted to learn whether Christians believe and pray to the Heavenly Mother. During my research, I interacted with church leaders and Christians from different denominations of Christianity, such as Catholicism, Mormonism, Protestantism, and Anglicanism. We were recently discussing the doctrine of the Heavenly Mother on my online Christian forum, and one of the participants noted that he once heard Christians do not pray to the Heavenly Mother and wanted to know why. Other questions emerged, and having done extensive research, I had all the answers. So, why don’t we pray to Heavenly Mother?

We don’t pray to the Heavenly Mother because Jesus instructed His disciples to pray to the Heavenly Father. In Matthew 6:5-15, Jesus taught His disciples how to pray and told them to start their prayer with “Our Father in Heaven.” Therefore, we follow the instructions that Jesus gave His disciples and the order He gave them to use while praying. Jesus also taught in John 16:23 that whatever we ask from the Father through Him will be granted to us. Therefore, we pray to the Heavenly Father through Jesus, not the Heavenly Mother, because Jesus the Son instructed us to pray to the Heavenly Father.

The Bible does not instruct us to pray to the Heavenly Mother but to the Heavenly Father. The Bible teaches us in Matthew 6:6 that we should pray in our rooms to our unseen Father, and He who sees everything will reward us. In this verse, Jesus was teaching his disciples how to pray. He told them that they should pray to the Father. Therefore, as Christians, we are to follow the teaching of Jesus Christ; hence, we should pray to the Heavenly Father and not Heavenly Mother.

Also, in Matthew 6:9, Jesus gave the disciples an example of the prayer to guide them while praying, called the Lord’s Prayer. While starting the prayer, Jesus addresses the prayer to the Heavenly Father. He honored the name of the Heavenly Father. Therefore, we should also address our prayers to the Heavenly Father just like Jesus taught.

Do Christians believe in a Mother in Heaven?

Some Christians believe in the Heavenly Mother, but most Christians, especially Presbyterian Christians, do not believe in the Heavenly Mother. In Mormonism, the Latter-day Saints Christians are some of the Christians who believe in a Mother in Heaven. They have faith that there is a Heavenly Mother and Heavenly Father, who are parents of all males and females. The theology is rooted in the prophetic teachings of God’s nature, our relationship to Holiness, and the righteous potential of women and men. Some Mormons in the LDS church even pray to the Mother in Heaven, but the LDS Church president is against this practice. He warned Mormons about praying to a Heavenly Mother because Christ taught his disciples to pray to the Heavenly Father.

In Catholicism, Catechism teaches that Virgin Mary is the Church’s Mother and its members. She is acknowledged as the Church’s Mother since she brings birth to believers in the church. On 2015 New Year’s Day, Pope Francis, in his homily, said that Mary is the Mother of God and the church, and through the church, she is the mother of everyone.

Christians don’t talk about the Heavenly Mother because the doctrine is not recognized by most Christian churches. It is only taught by some churches, such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Though it is also not frequently discussed in the LDS, the doctrine is briefly taught in the church teaching manuals, sermons, and church hymns.

Also, Christians don’t talk about the Heavenly Mother because the Bible does not mention anything about the Heavenly Mother. Christian teachings come from the Book of God, the Bible. The Bible does not mention anyone as the Heavenly Mother. It teaches that God is the Heavenly Father, the creator of everything on earth and in Heaven. Colossians 3:17 says that in everything we do, we should do it in the name of Jesus Christ and give thanks to God the Father through Christ Jesus. The Bible only acknowledges the Father.

What does the Christian church say about praying to the Heavenly Mother?

The Christian Church says no prayer should be to the Heavenly Mother. It says that Christians should address their prayers to the Heavenly Father as instructed by Jesus. The church teaches Christians to follow in the steps of Jesus Christ. It also teaches them to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.
