By sacrificing his son and letting him be led to the cross like a lamb, the scriptures remind me that I am forgiven and have someone watching over me. Studying the Bible opens the possibility of ‘lamb’ meaning a lot more than I anticipated. I’ve been studying the scripture and now have a deeper understanding of what the Lamb means, but that’s also when it struck me that the word ‘lamb’ appears severally throughout the Bible. How many times is Lamb mentioned in the Bible?

What does the Bible say about the Lamb of God?

In the Bible, the Lamb is regarded as the primary animal that the Jews sacrificed. It’s implied in Exodus 29:38-42 that a lamb would be sacrificed every morning and another in the evening according to the Mosaic system. Sacrificing lambs was particularly important on the Sabbath day. It’s also said that Lamb would be sacrificed on the special days of great spiritual significance, like on the first day of every month, as implied in Numbers 28:11, the Feast of Passover, and the Feast of Pentecost – Numbers 28:16-19.

The Bible also suggests that the phrase, Lamb of God is a symbol of gentleness and innocence. It’s believed that the prophets believed that the Lamb of God represented God’s tenderness and compassion for His people, who were described as the shepherd and the Lamb. It’s further explained that the Lamb of God represented God’s ultimate intentions for all His people, and the Lamb was the symbol of God’s people. Isaiah 40:11 and 11:6.

It also suggests that the Bible was the ultimate climax prophetic symbolism for people’s sufferings and his nations. Isaiah 53:7, Psalm 23, and Acts 8:32. 

Additionally, the New Testament uses the phrase Lamb of God symbolically to represent the importance of Jesus as the Lamb of God. This was implied by John the Baptist, who mentioned that Jesus was the Lamb of God in John 1:29. It’s believed that this verse represents Jesus as a sacrificial lamb that would be sacrificed to take away all the sins of the world. 1 Corinthians 5:7 and Isaiah 53 suggest the Lamb of God as a Mosaic Lamb to be sacrificed.  

The Bible also suggests that the word Lamb could have been used to refer to the disciples of Jesus Christ. Luke 10:3 also suggests that the seventy of Christ’s disciples were sent to the wolves, and when he arose, Apostle Peter was asked to feed the lambs. 

The use of Lamb in the Bible is also referenced in Revelation 13:11 and Revelation 5:1-14 where the word Lamb is believed to be used symbolically to represent Christ while also giving a comparison to some of the aspects of the beast. The Lamb and Lamb of God could also be used to symbolize the redemptive works of Jesus Christ and the redemptive work associated with God’s triumphant glory or victory over things on earth.

Lamb is mentioned 29 times across the book of Revelation, where the word Lamb is believed to symbolize Christ. It’s also believed that the word lamb is used in Revelation to represent a comparative statement that identifies some of the aspects of the beast – Revelation 13:11. The Lamb is believed to be of great religious significance, with the scriptural introductory reference implied in Revelation 5:1-14 regarding the fact that the term is used to refer to the Lamb triumphant, referring to the Lamb as Christ.

How many times is Jesus referred to as a Lamb in Revelation?

Jesus is referred to as ‘The Lamb’ at least 4 times throughout the book of Revelation. Even so, the word lamb is used 29 times in this book. The 4 mentions of Lamb as Christ also represent the mighty, triumphant, mighty, and God’s rendering of justice. 

It’s worth noting that the word Lamb is used to refer to worship, and the Lamb is presented as a symbol of Christ’s ultimate glory.

The Characteristics of the Lamb according to the Bible

In the Bible, the Lamb, specifically the unblemished Lamb, is a symbol of God’s sacrifice in covering up the sins of humankind. In Exodus 12:14, it’s implied that an unblemished lamb would be sacrificed to cover for the sins of the person that sinned because of the belief that the punishment for sin was death. With Jesus Christ as the sacrificial Lamb for humankind’s sins, Jesus is considered the perfect sacrifice for atoning for sins.

Lamb is also characterized as a symbol of innocence and patience, and they represent endured suffering of believers as implied in Acts 8:32 and 1 Peter 1:19.

Lamb also symbolizes Jesus’ disciples, as suggested in Luke 10:3, which suggests that all 70 of Christ’s disciples are referred to as lambs. 

How the Lamb became a powerful Christian symbol

The Lamb became an important symbol throughout the Bible and Christianity because it represented a sacrificial symbol that would take away the sins of the world. Genesis 22:8 suggests that when Abraham was about to sacrifice his son, Isaac, God spoke to him and provided a fat, pure Lamb instead for him to sacrifice. The Jews also sacrificed unblemished lambs to ask for forgiveness, especially on special religious days, because the Lamb was considered a sign of atonement.

Then in John 1:29, during Christ’s baptism, John the Baptist is believed to have pronounced Jesus as the Lamb of God who would take away all the sins of the world.

As a result, the Lamb became the most powerful symbol for Christians because it represents the forgiveness of sins.

John 1:36 – In this verse, Jesus was referred to as the Lamb of God. 

Revelation 5:11-12 – In this verse, the Lamb is used to refer to Jesus Christ, who is worthy and would receive God’s power, wisdom, and wealth.

Genesis 22:7-8 – This verse narrates that Abraham was given a sacrificial lamb just when he was about to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. 

Revelation 12:11 – This verse shows that the Lamb of God is a symbol of salvation through Christ by the power of the Lamb.

Exodus 12:5 – This verse mentions that the unblemished Lamb would be used as a sacrifice.

Isaiah 53:7 – This verse refers to the Lamb of God, and it represents the suffering faced by people. 

Revelation 7:17 – This verse is believed to imply that the Lamb (of God) would be a shepherd of the people, and he would guide them to the springs of water and that He’d wipe away the tears of the brokenhearted.

John 1:29 – this verse mentions that Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God, and He takes away the sins of the world.

Acts 8:28-35 – In this verse, there is mention of sheep being led to the slaughter quietly the same way lamb is led to its shearer quietly.

Is the Lamb of God mentioned in the Old Testament?

While the word Lamb is used severally in the Old Testament to refer to Jesus, scriptures don’t use the phrase ‘Lamb of God.’ The word Lamb represents prophesies of the coming Messiah. The Lamb of God is used in the New Testament in Luke 13:3,5 and John 1:29.
