I have spent years as a theologian reading about the faithful servants of God and how they died. I was, however, intrigued to learn that Enoch and Elijah did not experience death, as they were taken to heaven while alive. I became interested in this topic and wanted to know if other believers could go to heaven without dying. I did extensive research through different Christian books and consulted with various theology professors, where I learned a lot. Last week, a member of my online Christian forum wanted to know if one can go to heaven without dying. This question stemmed from our previous discussion about the origin of death. From my vast research and experience on the topic, I shared with the class the correct answer. So, can you go to heaven without dying?
No scripture in the Bible explains to us how one can go to heaven without dying. Death was brought into the world due to the sins of Adam, the first man, and so every man born with this sin must die. Genesis 3:19 records God passing his punishment to Adam and that he shall return to the dust he came from.
So, join me until the end as I explore more about this topic. I will explain why Enoch and Elijah were taken to heaven without dying, among other interesting topics.
Why were Enoch and Elijah taken to heaven without dying?
We cannot tell why Enoch and Elijah were taken to heaven without dying, as the Bible does not give us the main reason. However, a few scriptures reveal God took these two great men to heaven without dying.
For Enoch, the Bible reveals to us in Genesis 5:24 that he walked faithfully for three hundred years with God, and then he was no more because God took him. 2 Kings 2:11 reveals that Elijah was taken up in heaven by a chariot of fire and horses in a whirlwind.
Scholars have suggested that God may have taken Enoch and Elijah to heaven without dying to prepare them for their death in Revelations 11:3-12 while acting as the two witnesses of God.
Does the Bible mention that you have to die to go to heaven?

The Bible does not mention that one has to die to go to heaven. However, the Bible reveals that people have been destined to die once in Hebrews 9:27, suggesting that death is a must thing for every man. Various scriptures in the Bible also promise believers to see heaven after their death. In John 14:1-3, Jesus promises his people that he is going to prepare a place for them in heaven and then come back for them during his second coming. Jesus would not have said these words if he were sure others would follow him to heaven without dying.
Revelations 14:13 also reveals that blessed are those who die in the lord, for they say rest and their deeds will follow them. If one could easily go to heaven without dying, then this scripture could not exist, as it promises believers to rest, even though they must die.
Can you visit heaven and come back without dying?
There is no scripture in the Bible that states one can visit heaven and return without dying. Additionally, John 3:13 states that no one has ever gone into heaven except Jesus, the one who came from heaven. We all know that Jesus had to die and resurrect to ascend back to heaven, insinuating that it is impossible for one to casually go to heaven and come back without experiencing pain. One is expected to see God when they go to heaven, yet John 1:18 records that no one has ever seen God except Jesus.
