Whenever people in my bible study group question their faith or want to strengthen it, I tell them to read the Psalms. Last week, however, they wanted to know the best Psalms to read about faith because Psalms is extensive.
Since I had a deeper understanding of the Bible as a theologian, I gave them some of the best Psalms regarding faith. I later wrote this article for others who may want the same answers.
7 Best Psalms that talk about faith
Psalm 119:105
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
The psalmist describes God’s word as a light for his feet and like a light on his path. He wanted to show how the word of God guides him in the right direction.
Just like a bright light or lamp that leads the way, we should follow God’s word so we are not lost. You can read this verse when unsure about having faith in the word.
Psalm 27:1
“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?”
The psalmist describes God as the light, the salvation, and the stronghold in our life and that because of this, we should have no fear or be afraid because he is always at our side.
This Psalm is an excellent way to show God is always with us.
Psalm 31:14-15
“But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.”
In these verses, David tells God that he trusts and surrenders himself to him because his life is in God’s hand, and he prays to God to deliver him from his enemy’s hand.
This Psalm shows us to ultimately have faith in God by fully trusting and surrendering our lives to him.
Psalm 62:5-8
“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”
In these verses, David emphasized the faith he has in God. He gives instances of how God is his rock, his salvation, how his soul finds rest with God, and how his honor only depends on God.
In the same verse, he also tells people to trust God because he is our refuge. This Psalm implores us to depend on God and wholly have faith and trust him.
Psalm 143:8
“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.”
The psalmist tells God every morning he will still have unfailing love for God, and he still entrusts God with his life. This Psalm shows us that even when things do not go our way, every new day, we should wake up with an appreciation for God and still have much faith in him so we can entrust our lives in his hands.
Psalm 121:1-2
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
The psalmist invites us to sing this song of ascension that our help only comes from God, the maker of heaven and earth. The psalmist wants us to pray, believe, and always seek God’s help in any trouble.
This Psalm is good to use when you find yourself in a crisis, and you should never let your faith wane but ask God for help.
Psalm 23:4
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
David, in this Psalm, shows how much faith he has in God that even when he walks in the darkest valley, he will fear no evil that comes his way because he trusts that God will protect him.
Such a Psalm can help us not lose faith in God in times of danger because he is our protector, rod, and staff.
What is the best time to read these Psalms?
Most Christians agree that the best time to read such Psalms varies because circumstances differ with individuals. One may read it in the morning to get through the day, while another may decide to read it during the evening.
Others may read it when they feel bad or have doubts. So, any time is an excellent time to find comfort in faith Psalms.
Can you read these Psalms to someone who is losing their faith?
Yes, you can read these Psalms to someone losing faith. Psalms contains several verses that can comfort and encourage anyone losing their faith in God.
They give hope to anyone so they understand that help can come from God and that he is our light. Moreover, Psalms shows us how we should always find rest in him and never forget that even when we start losing our faith, he will still hold us in his hands.
How to pray the Psalms to strengthen your faith
A common way to pray the Psalms to strengthen your faith is through recitation. You can recite Psalms constantly as a form of prayer, especially when you want to enhance your faith.
According to some scholars, when you are repeating the Psalms, it is believed there is usually no interference, and the prayers ascend higher.
Another way to pray the Psalms can be through chanting or singing. You can sing such Psalms to help strengthen your faith in God.
