I enjoy reading the book of Psalms because it has chapters and verses that emphasize praying for my nation, and every Christian should pray for their nation.
Recently, our church organized an Independence Day celebration service, and I was tasked to come up with relevant scriptures to open the service.
Given my interaction with the Psalms and its emphasis on praying for nations, I felt that it was the perfect book to read during this service.
I curated a list of some of the best Psalms for Independence Day, and I also thought it would be a great idea to share them with you in this post.
5 Psalm to read on Independence Day
Psalm 33:12-22
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance. From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth—he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.”
The Psalmist in this Psalm explains how God blesses a nation that acknowledges and recognizes that its people are chosen by the Lord.
This means that independence and prosperity ultimately depend on God’s favor and guidance. Therefore, this is one of the best psalms to read on Independence Day to pray for guidance and the favor of the Lord upon your nation.
Psalm 118:5
“When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place.”
This Psalm talks about seeking help and deliverance from God. In this verse, David speaks about how he cried to God in the hard times, and God came to his rescue.
On Independence Day, people reflect on the nation’s history, the struggles for freedom, and the blessing of liberty. So, this verse is the best to read on Independence Day because it reminds you that during diversity and difficulty, you can turn to God for help and deliverance.
Psalm146:2
“I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.”
The Psalmist in this verse emphasizes praising and thanking God in your life. This Psalm shows the importance of thanking God and a sense of dedication to God.
So, on Independence Day, people usually reflect on their freedom, and one of the ways to do this is by thanking and praising God for liberty and the nation’s history.
Therefore, this is one of the best Psalms to read on Independence Day because it helps you to be thankful to God.
Psalm 91:1-2
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'”
These two verses express the idea that those who seek refuge well in the presence of God will find protection. Therefore, this verse can be a reminder of the importance of seeking shelter and guidance from God during challenging times or when the nation’s freedom is being threatened.
Psalm 124:7-8
“We have escaped like a bird from the fowler’s snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
In these verses, David speaks of how they escaped from danger and oppression by the hand of the Lord. Therefore, this Psalm can be used as a reminder of how God fought for the nation to gain their independence and freedom.
So, this is one of the best Psalms to read on Independence Day because it helps you acknowledge God’s grace and help that enabled your nation to escape from the difficult moments.
