The Bible also tells us not to swear by his name falsely, as explained in Matthew 5:33. This verse says, Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn. As you listen to others, pay more attention to when they correctly or incorrectly use the Lord’s name. This can boost your understanding of the proper and improper usage of the Lord’s name.
Remain focused on achieving your goal. Correcting the bad habit of misusing the Lord’s name takes time. Since this is a gradual process, you may make one or two mistakes as you try to unlearn the habit. If you do this, ask God for forgiveness and avoid repeating the same in the future.
Bible verses about God’s name
Exodus 20:7 directly talks about the consequences of misusing the Lord’s name. This verse says You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name. This verse shares the same message as Deuteronomy 5:11, which says, You should not misuse the name of the Lord, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
Leviticus 19:12 says, Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the Lord. This verse means that whenever you make a declaration as you swear by God’s name, it must not be one you do not intend to keep.
This book continues to emphasize not misusing the Lord’s name. Leviticus 24:16 says, Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him. The sojourner, as well as the native, when he blasphemes the name, shall be put to death.
In Psalms 139:20, David talks about the wicked who misuse the Lord’s name. This verse says They speak against you with malicious intent; your enemies take your name in vain. In this verse, he is disgusted by such evil people and asks God to search his heart to see if he has sinned. David also prays to God to lead him in the way everlasting.
In the same book, in chapter 61:8, Christians can learn to use God’s name in the right way by praising him. This verse says, Then I will ever sing in praise of your name and fulfill my vows day after day.
