If you are a recent convert, it might take patience and commitment to know God to establish a relationship with him. It takes more than just going to church and reading the word. You have to live the word and walk as Jesus did. However, how will you know if you have established a relationship with him? The only way you can know if you have a relationship with Jesus is if you obey his word and do his will. Jesus says that if you say you love him, then you have to do what his word says (John 14:23). And to establish a personal and intimate relationship with God, we have to seek him through prayer and read the word, and strive to know who he really says he is. If we understand who Jesus is, then we will keep his word.

What does it mean to have a relationship with Jesus?
Loving him and keeping his word! We already know that Jesus loves us so much that he became a sin so that we may be saved. He chose to suffer and be humiliated for our sake so that we may enjoy a close relationship when he eventually goes to heaven (where he is right now). Jesus says that those who love have to obey his word, which is what a relationship with him means; abiding in him and his teachings.
However, we should be aware our relationship with Jesus is based on faith and the grace of God. Because it is through Salvation that we can form a relationship with him. And it is not by our works that we gain Salvation, but by mercy and grace of God, through our faith.
What does the Bible say about having a relationship with Jesus?
The Bible not only indicates that it is essential to have a relationship with Jesus, but Jesus himself also calls us his friend. John 15:15 reads, “No longer do I call you servants, for the servants, does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my father I have made know to you.”
The Bible is also clear that we share a wonderful relationship with Jesus, as he loved us while we were still in sin. Jesus’ love for us is the purest form of love. Romans 5:8 says, “God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”
How do you build a relationship with Jesus?
Building a relationship with Jesus will require you to seek him and know him for who he truly says he is. For some Christians, establishing a relationship with Jesus looks like praying and going to church on Sundays. Others it is reading the Bible and fasting to know Jesus. But establishing a relationship with Jesus does not stop there. Even what you say and how you act should represent Christ.
The Bible clearly states that those who believe in him and claim that they are his followers have to walk as he did. That is the ultimate way to build a relationship with Jesus. Lastly, a relationship with Jesus Christ is not one-sided, but we must believe in his word daily. John 14:23 says, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my father will love him and come to him and make our home with him.” Therefore, to have a relationship with Christ is to obey his word and walk as he did.
Ways to know that I have a relationship with Jesus?
Knowing Jesus Christ is actually the most exciting and peaceful relationship you will ever experience. The first way to know if you have a relationship with him is through Salvation. You have to accept and believe in Christ as your personal savior and have faith that you have been saved, not by your own works, but by his grace and mercy.
If you have sincerely accepted Christ in your life, then be sure you have a secure relationship with him. What you have to do after that to maintain that relationship is to abide in him and seek him. This is through reading the scripture, spending quality time with him through prayer, and doing what he commands you to do.
What does it feel like to have a relationship with Jesus?
A relationship with Jesus is exceptional, as it feels like you have a friend who loves you unconditionally. Having an intimate relationship with him feels like you have a friend with who you can reach out for strength and guidance at any time. Being his friend means that you believe in him, and thus you have the Holy Spirit to help you through.
The book of Romans 8:26-27 reads, “In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and he who searches the hearts the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is because he intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”
It is a relationship full of mercy and grace. God extends to us his mercy and unconditional love even when we are undeserving. He ensures the Spirit is with us to intercede for us and help us during our weakness. Therefore, having a relationship with Jesus is like having an ever-faithful friend. One who will never leave your side despite whatever you face.
Is the relationship with Jesus the same as the relationship with God?
A relationship with Jesus is the same as having a relationship with God because you cannot hate one and love the other. Jesus says in the gospel of John that he and the father are one. Further, he insists that one cannot go through the father except through him. Jesus is fully God and fully human; therefore, he remains God, and establishing a relationship with him is establishing a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Is my relationship with Jesus healthy?
A healthy relationship with God requires us to obey his will and do what he says in his word. The New Testament clearly states that those who follow him ought to walk as he did. So, you might ask yourself, what does having a healthy relationship with Jesus really look like?
The answer is simple, walking in the light as he did. Jesus calls us our friends, meaning we must respect and love him. The book of 1st John 1:6-7 says, “If we claim we have a fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his son, purifies us from all sin.”
Lastly, if you are in God and follow what his word says, you do have to be worried if your relationship with him is healthy or not. God requires us to be confident in him and know that by accepting Christ, we belong in him. John 5:13 says, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.” Therefore, all we have to do is trust God and be assured of eternal life.
