The Bible scriptures teach about the divinity of Jesus Christ. The first four books of the New Testament that record the ministry of Jesus on earth offer great insight into His divinity. The rest of the books echoed the divine power of Christ. The Old Testament records prophecies about Christ that can be used to teach and deduce that Jesus is divine.
Where in the Bible does it mention the divinity of Jesus?
The Bible does not mention that Jesus is divine, but it records the works and the period of Jesus Christ on earth when He lived and acted in full divinity. In the book of Mark2:5-7 “And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Even though they thought He was blasphemous when He died, signs showed that He was the Son of God and that He forgave sins meant that He was living like God on earth.
Bible verses about the divinity of Jesus
John 20:28 says, “Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” The fact that humans called Him God proved that He lived divinely like God on earth but in the flesh.
John 8:58 says, “I am telling you the truth,” Jesus replied. “Before Abraham was born, ‘I Am.'” This verse implies that Jesus is divine because He existed even before his forefathers and refutes the idea that He had a beginning.
John 10:28-30, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never die. No one can snatch them away from me. What my Father has given me is greater than everything, and no one can snatch them away from the Father’s care. The Father and I are one.” This verse implies that Jesus is more like God and that God is divine.
How can Jesus be fully human and also divine?
Jesus can be fully divine because He had full characteristics of God. He was fully human because He had flesh, and he could feel the pain of the flesh like humans. John 1:14 says, ” The Word became a human being and lived among us, full of grace and truth. We saw his glory, the glory which he received as the Father’s only Son.” But in the beginning, the word was God, according to John 1:1
What makes Jesus divine?
The Birth of Jesus Christ makes Him divine.
The Birth of Jesus was the most unique and divine because he was conceived by a virgin. His conception was that of no sin. Luke 1:35 says, “The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and God’s power will rest upon you. For this reason, the holy child will be called the Son of God.”
Jesus Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice makes him a divine being.
Any other Human being would have been sacrificed for the sinful humans. Still, because it needed a divine human, Jesus had to endure all the pain because he had inherited the divine power from God. Jesus’s crucifixion proved the prophecy in Isaiah 53: 4-6; it is prophesied that Jesus would suffer physically for the sake of all human beings. This verse implies that Jesus Christ was indeed divine because He fulfilled the prophecy, and all in the world were forgiven.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ proves that He is a divine
In John 20:15-17 it is written that “Then she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. “Woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who is it that you are looking for?” She thought he was the gardener, so she said to him, “If you took him away, sir, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned toward him and said in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (This means “Teacher.”) “Do not hold on to me,” Jesus told her, “because I have not yet gone back up to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them that I am returning to him who is my Father and their Father, my God and their God.” This part proves that there was a human being who witnessed the Resurrected Jesus. In human history, only Jesus came to life through his own power, which proves his divinity. He was also seen by two other disciples. Over 500 people saw Jesus Christ after his resurrection and what’s more, is that He ascended into Heaven.

There are many Biblical arguments supporting the divinity of Jesus. The books of the New Testament prove that Jesus is divine. John 1:1 and 1:14 provide arguments that Jesus is divine.
Are there arguments against the divinity of Jesus?
There are arguments against the divinity of Jesus. Some Christians and other religions, like Islam, do not believe that Jesus was God in the flesh. The top argument is that God did not have a beginning, yet Jesus had a beginning.
Why is the divinity of Jesus essential to Christians?
The faith of Christians was founded by Christ. Christian believe in His name. He preached that Christians could get to God only through Him. Therefore Christians have to understand His divinity.
How is Jesus’ divinity revealed in the New Testament?
The New Testament, right from the book of Matthew to the book of Revelation, proves that Jesus was divine. Right from His name, Emmanuel, which means God with us, implies that Jesus was divine. In Matthew 1:23, it is written that “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”(which means God with us). This scripture implies that it is true that incarnation took place, and God became human. Therefore Jesus was 100% God and 100% human, meaning He was a divine human being.
Jesus is referred to as Yahweh. Matthew 3:3 says, “ For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.” The fact that John the Baptist fulfilled Prophet Isaiah’s prophecy implies that Jesus is Yahweh and Yahweh is God. Isaiah’s prophecy is found in Isaiah 40:3.
The New Testament records how Jesus performed miracles that prove His divinity. The first four books of the New Testament recorded how Jesus exercised His power over nature. We know that God is the creator and can make nature comply with His commands. It implies that Jesus was a divine being. We suggest that Jesus was God on earth because He performed works that the anointed ones could not simply perform. They include;
- Jesus used divine power to heal the sick. In the book of Matthew 4:23-24, it is recorded that Jesus healed the sick in Galilee. Also, Matthew 8:5-17 records healing miracles that Jesus performed using divine power.
- Also, when Jesus walked on water, He proved that He was divine because that is something that no other prophet in history had ever done save for when Jesus empowered Peter to walk on water towards Him. It is recorded in the book Matthew 14:22-31 that on that day, the disciples saw Jesus walking on water, and Peter requested to go and meet him which He agreed. Jesus granted Peter the power to walk on water because Peter started walking in faith. However, along the way, he lost faith and started drowning.
- In Matthew 14:32-33, after He walked on water, He went on to calm the storm, and the disciples worshipped Him.
- Also, when the woman who was bleeding touched Jesus and got healed, Jesus felt divine power leaving His body. Mark 5:30 says that when the woman got healed, Jesus felt His divine power living in His body.
- The New Testament also records Jesus using His divine power to raise the dead. He raised the daughter of Jairus from the dead in Matthew 9:23-26. Luke 7:14 records when Jesus used His divine power to raise the Son of the Widow of Nain from the dead. Also, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. It takes God’s divine power to raise dead people, which means that Jesus is God.
Jesus’s divinity is also proved in the New Testament through His claim of authority over the Sabbath day. Matthew 12:8 says, “for the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” This verse implies that Jesus was God because Sabbath is for God, and Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath.
Also, the New Testament records moments when the demons feared Jesus, proving that He was a divine being. Demons knew that Jesus was living on earth like God and were scared that He would destroy them. Mark 1:24 says, “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are—you are God’s holy messenger!” Also, Matthew 8:29 says, “At once they screamed, “What do you want with us, you Son of God? Have you come to punish us before the right time?”
Also, Jesus forgave sins and accepted to be worshipped as recorded in the New Testament.
