The Bible mentions the blood of Jesus in the New Testament, and most of the time, when it does, it refers to the blood that Jesus shed on the cross. However, what was Jesus’ blood type?
The scripture mentions nothing about the blood type of Jesus. Though the blood of Jesus carried a great significance in the forgiveness of our sins, no one can tell with certainty whether it was O, A, B, or AB. Therefore, any conclusion that Jesus was a specific blood type is not grounded in what is revealed in the scripture.

Most theologians are in the dark regarding Jesus’ blood type. This is because science and medicine had not developed then as it has. However, some hold to the popular belief that Jesus had AB blood type. The evidence that Jesus had AB blood type is based on scientific tests that have been done on different passion relics and Eucharistic miracles.
An Italian Cardiologist, Dr. Serafini, notes that the results of all the specimens tested came out as AB, and thus Jesus must have been of blood type AB. However, whether it was AB negative or AB positive is unclear. It is key to note that these findings cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, and thus the blood type of Jesus cannot be concluded to be AB.
Why do some people believe that Jesus had an AB blood type?
Most people believe that Jesus had blood type AB because of the Shroud of Turin. This is an ancient relic that has an image of someone who is being crucified. The blood type tests done on this ancient relic determine that the crucified person had blood type AB, which people believe is the blood type of Jesus of Nazareth. Those who hold this view also insist that the male on the Shroud of Turin was Jesus.
Therefore, that is the basis of the belief that Jesus was blood type AB. However, it is important to note that these claims cannot be proved because no one knows for sure that the crucified male on the ancient relic was Jesus Christ, and the blood was his. Additionally, this perception that Jesus had AB blood type has no biblical evidence to back it up.
What does the Bible say about Jesus’ blood?
The New Testament mentions the blood of Jesus a lot; however, the blood of Jesus that is often referred to in the scripture is not Jesus’ literal blood but his death. Romans 3:24-26 says, “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ: whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God. To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness, that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.”
Ephesians 1:6-8 echoes the book of Romans that we were saved by the blood of Jesus, “To the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the one he loves. In him, we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that lavishes on us. With all wisdom and understanding.”
Mathew 26:28 reads, “For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
1st John 1:7, “But if walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his son cleanses us from all sin.”
Hebrews 9:14, “How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”
Acts 20:28 reads, “Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.”
Hebrews 9:22, “Indeed, under the law, almost everything is purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”
1st Peter 1:2 says, “According to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood, may grace and peace be multiplied to you.”
Revelation 1:5, “And from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from sins by his blood.”
Do scientists know Jesus’ blood type and the Rhesus factor?
Scientists do not know with certainty the blood type of Jesus. However, several blood type tests done on ancient relics imply that Jesus was of blood type AB. Whether he was AB negative or positive is not known. However, Dr. Serafini believes that the samples collected were AB-Negative, making the blood type of Jesus AB-Negative. The conclusion of these tests does not prove that Jesus had blood type AB, as there is no evidence to support these results.
